It’s official: Buying a home is more stressful than having a child!

I have moved many times and as a result I don’t tend to find it stressful it anymore, which is why I set up Designs on Property. However, one thing I don’t have to worry about when I move is how the kids feel and all of their things that need moving.

Apparently though, according to latest research from Unbiased owning a home is now more stressful than having a child! Which even though I now completely understand the stresses and strains other people go through when they move, I still find it a little hard to believe!

However, according to the research:-

• One in four homeowners (24%) said buying a house was the most stressful experience of their lives, followed by starting a new job (14%), having a child (13%) and getting married (9%).
• But 41% of second time buyers state buying their second home was just as or even more stressful than buying their first.
• Finding the right property was the most stressful part of the house buying process for one in three (35%) homeowners.
• House buying remained the number one stressful life experience for all ages** – rising to 37% of those aged between 20 and 29, and 24% of those aged 70 or over.
• 41% of second time buyers finding buying their second home as or more stressful than their first.
• Almost one sixth of second time buyers (16%) felt it was a bigger decision than their first purchase as it was a property for the long term.

More seriously, what this research does suggest is that moving up the ladder increases, rather than decreases the stress of moving. That’s not a huge surprise as having bought for the first time, when you buy again you have to sell a property at the same time and try and co-ordinate your move – which is much more difficult to do as you are at the ‘mercy’ of the market.

The problem with moving home is that one move is never the same as the next. The first move might be a small flat, the second a larger, freehold home, the next out to a rural area from a suburb or to a completely new area. So each time you move, the experience tends to get more complicated rather than less so.

Once we are older, we have to deal with ‘double’ stress factors such as moving because a partner is ill – or sadly even died. We know that trading down for many people is a hugely stressful experience.

However, don’t worry and don’t stress, because we are here to HELP YOU! We can:-
