Where Can I Find New Homes

There are many ways to look for new homes. You can go on-line for new home specific websites such as SmartHomes, New Homes and Your New Home. Or you can look in your local paper and estate agent office. Always make sure you carry out a 'snagging' survey before you complete contracts to check that the new home is in good order. For more information read our section on new properties or download our Buying a Home eBook.

Where Can I Find Park Homes
Park homes are increasingly popular and are usually in great locations, some with a lovely local community including a shop and/or other facilities. Park homes can be found advertised on property portals such as Rightmove or via your local estate agent, but you should also visit Park Home and Holiday Caravan and buy their magazine, read our Park Homes factsheet or download our Unusual Homes eBook. Where Can I Find Barns for Conversion

Barns to convert are very popular, so you may pay over odds to buy one! They can be found in our Finding a Property services page or read our factsheet on How to Find a Property, but are also in specialist search facilities such as Plot Search and Barns etc. Never buy a barn to convert unless you are sure that you can get planning permission and services such as water and electricity. Further information can be found in our Barn Conversions factsheet and eBook.

Where Can I Find House Boats

House boats that already have a mooring are rarely advertised, so the best way to find one is to visit the area you want to buy, and walk up and down the river/canal and talk to the locals! Ask if anyone knows a property coming up for sale and pop a note through the person who might be selling's door. Try to find a house boat already moored, or find the mooring first before buying a boat as moorings are hard to find and sometimes have a waiting list that last years. Visit Boats and Outboards and also purchase their magazine, and Apollo Duck  to help you find moored houseboats for sale. Read our House Boats factsheet or download our Unusual Homes eBook.

Where Can I Find Churches for Conversion
These are very tricky to find, but even more tricky to get planning permission to convert! So ideally look for churches already with planning permission. Some will be available in places ‘where you can find a property' and others you can find by driving around local areas and visiting churches and talking to the local clergy. You can also approach the church(es) directly via the Church of England website which has details about redundant churches that you could look at and contact for more information. Also read a useful article by English Heritage on redundant churches.  Read our Church Conversion factsheet or download our Unusual Homes eBook.

Where Can I Find Renovation Projects

These can sometimes be found in the same place as ‘how to find a property' however they often go for more money than they are worth, so the trick is to try and find one before it reaches the market or one that doesn't appear in the standard searches. Look for similar specialist searches such as Plot Search and Pick a Property. Alternatively have a drive around and find properties that look like they need renovating and either find out who owns them if they are ‘empty', or put a note through the door to say you would be interested in their property if they would considering selling. Visit My Kind of Home and Pick Up a Property so you get your project off to a good start. Download our Renovation eBook for further information.

Where Can I Find Plots of Land
These can sometimes be found in the same place as How to Find a Property but they will often be priced very high. So you will need to search for specialist databases such as Plotsearch. Alternatively have a drive around and find plots of land that are for sale privately, or even a big back garden to a property that the owner might sell to you if you ask politely! You can also approach new build developments to see if they have any spare land they might sell you and definitely visit My Kind of Home and Pick Up a Property so you get your project off to a good start. BEWARE: Don't buy a plot of land without planning permission on it as you are unlikely to get permission! Download our Building a Property eBook for more information.

Where Can I Find Land to Buy Without Planning
It is only worth considering buying land without planning if you don't plan to build on it! You could buy woodland or a field for horses. Land is often sold in local newspapers or on specialist land sites such as Plotsearch. You can also approach an estate agent that specialises in farms such as Humberts who can work on your behalf (at a cost!) to find some land for you and negotiate a fair price.

Where Can I Find Property Auctions

These are now very easy to find as there is a very good Property Auction website called EIGroup that you can subscribe to, and if you become a member you'll get a discount. You can also go through your local newspaper property pages and visiting your local auction houses. Usually there will be one or more estate agents that also run their own auctions. To find a list of auctions across the UK visit EIGroup which covers more auctions than any other site. Each auction house will have a list of properties that are coming up for sale and you must make sure you are ready to buy on the day by having a deposit ready, making sure you have done your legal work and had a survey on the property.

Where Can I Find Property to Rent

There are lots of ways to find property on and off line. Look at websites such as Rightmove, but rentals move much faster than buying/selling so check letting agents websites directly such as Belvoir Lettings. Look in your local newspaper, especially the property section which will be published once a week. Then visit local letting agents on a weekly basis to get their 'lists'. For further information, read our Finding a Home to Rent factsheet and download our Renting a Property eBook.

Where Can I Find A Room to Rent
As you live in with the landlord when renting a room, the best way is to ask around friends/family to see if they know anyone that will rent a room to you. Alternatively you can checkout websites such as Gumtree or Spare Room. Make sure that you sign a licence agreement and are clear what areas of the property you can/can't use.  Visit our Finding a Room section and download our Finding a Home to Rent eBook.

Where Can I Find A Serviced Apartment to Rent

Most major cities now have a choice of serviced apartments that you can rent. Serviced apartments are particularly useful if you don't want to stay in a hotel, and want to rent for a few weeks or months. You can find service apartments mainly on-line at websites such as Room Space. However check your local Yellow Pages, or Yell.com as many aren't listed on-line or anywhere else.
